What are Chemical Reactions?

Chemical reactions are inseparable from our lives. The reason is, that almost everything in nature is related to chemical reactions. Chemical reactions are chemical changes that occur around us. A chemical reaction is the process of one or more substances being changed into different substances and producing new compounds.

Chemical reactions are characterized by color changes, heat production, and physical changes. Chemical reactions are influenced by the reaction rate. The rate of chemical reactions is influenced by various factors.

Because there are many chemical reactions in the universe, nomenclature is used. Its purpose is to simplify chemical reactions and help humans understand chemical reaction processes in nature in the form of chemical equations.

A chemical equation is a mathematical statement used to explain the formation of products from reactants. In a chemical reaction equation, the reactants are written on the left, and the products are written on the right.

A + B → C + D

  • A and B are reactants.
  • C and D are products.

What are The Types of Chemical Reactions?

There are many types of chemical reactions in nature. However, you need to understand the following types of common chemical reactions.

  • Combustion Reactions: This reaction requires a flammable material and an oxidizer to produce an oxidized product. Oxidizers are chemical compounds needed by fuel to react. An example is oxygen.
  • Decomposition Reactions: Decomposition reactions are reactions used to decompose two or more compounds into simple products. If the decomposition reaction is caused by heating, it is called a thermal decomposition reaction.
  • Precipitation Reactions: These reactions require reactants (solutions) and produce products (solids).
  • Displacement Reactions: Displacement reactions are also called substitution reactions. Displacement reactions are chemical reactions involving reactive elements and less reactive elements. In this reaction, more reactive elements will replace less reactive elements.

What are The Factors Affecting Chemical Reactions?

All chemical reactions are influenced by various factors. So, let’s discuss the various factors that influence chemical reactions here!

  • Temperature: One of the energies that increase chemical reactions is kinetic energy. Kinetic energy can increase with increasing temperature. If the temperature increases, the kinetic energy will also increase.
  • Reactant Concentration: Chemical reactions are directly affected by the concentration of reactants. So, the higher the concentration of reactants, the faster the chemical reaction. Why? This is because high concentrations will increase the frequency of collisions between molecules.
  • Catalyst: A catalyst is a substance that is used to increase the rate of a reaction and will not change chemically during the reaction process. Catalysts work by lowering the activation energy and helping to achieve reaction balance.
  • Pressure: Pressure is a term used to represent the concentration of a gas. If the pressure is high, the number of collisions will increase. Therefore, pressure also increases the rate of chemical reactions.
  • Surface Area: The rate of a chemical reaction is also affected by the surface area of the solid reactants. To increase the surface area, you can turn the solid into a powder.
  • Reactants: The bonds in the reactants also influence the chemical reaction. An example is ionic bonded compounds which react more easily than covalently bonded compounds.
  • Solvent: The type of solvent also affects the rate of a chemical reaction. Solvents function to dissolve reactants. Solvents will break down the cohesive forces between molecules and make it easier for the reactants to react. Polar solvents are used to dissolve polar compounds and nonpolar solvents are used to dissolve nonpolar compounds.
