What are the Five Layers of Soil?

As one of the most essential elements in the environment, sometimes people overlook soil's existence. Soil consists of air, water, minerals, also plant and animal elements (both alive and dead). With the biotic and abiotic factors within, soil plays an important role in ecosystem continuity. As National Geographic said, the composition of abiotic factors will likely affect the biotic factors, such as what kinds of plants can grow in an ecosystem.

Soil has five layers that are classified based on their horizons and what element is contained in each horizon. You can learn more about the soil layers with Soil Worksheets for 3rd Grade. Through its Biology section, The University of Hawai'i breaks down the five soil layers and the material inside them.

1. O Horizon
The O horizon or organic mainly contains fresh decomposing organic matter or known as humus on the top surface, and decomposed vegetation at its base.
2. A Horizon
The A horizon (surface) consists of a mixture of organic material with inorganic materials of weathering. This layer is darkly coloured because of the presence of organic matter.
3. B Horizon
The B Horizon is a buildup of many fine elements that have moved downward, producing a dense layer in the soil. B horizon is also known as sub-soil.
4. C Horizon
The C horizon or substratum is also called the soil base. This layer contains the parent material and the broken-down organic and inorganic materials.
5. R Horizon
Bedrock is another name for R Horizon, the name is matched since this layer is simply a bedrock with little to no weathering to be found.

What are the Main Four Types of Soil?

Soil is divided into four types. sandy soil, silt soil, clay soil, and loamy soil. Sandy soil consists of little particles of weathered rocks. This type of soil has very low nutrients and cannot hold water well. Silt soil is made up of rocks and other mineral elements which are smaller than sand yet bigger than clay. Clay soil contains tightly packed particles with very little to no air space. Loamy soil is a mix of sand, silt, and clay properties. You can practice your knowledge about types of soil with our Soil Worksheets for 3rd Grade.

What are the Three Main Types of Rock?

There are three types of rock, sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic. Here is the explanation of each rock type by National Geographic.

Sedimentary Rocks
Sedimentary rocks are formed from pieces of other rock or organic elements. Sedimentary rocks are divided into three kinds, clastic, organic or biological, and chemical.
Igneous Rocks
Igneous rocks are formed of solidified molten hot materials. When these rocks formed inside the earth, they are called intrusive or plutonic igneous rocks. Meanwhile, if they formed outside the Earth's crust, they are called extrusive or volcanic igneous rocks.
Metamorphic Rocks
Metamorphic rocks are rocks that have been changed from their original form because of extreme heat or pressure. Metamorphic rocks are divided into two classes, foliated and non-foliated.

What is Ocean Floor?

The ocean floor or also known as the seabed is the bottom of the ocean and covers more than 70% of the planet's Earth's surface. Like in the land, the ocean floor also has many features like flat plains, sharp mountains, and rugged canyons. The ocean floor contains many kinds of materials that humans use in their daily life such as copper, zinc, nickel, gold, silver, and phosphorus. Until today, it is still difficult to measure the shape and depth of the ocean floor.

What is Seafloor Spreading?

Seafloor spreading was first introduced by Harry Hammon Hess, in his book he stated a theory that explains how the continents can drift. Seafloor spreading is a geologic process where tectonic plates strip Earth's lithosphere, and split it apart from each other. Seafloor spreading is the result of mantle convection activity, which will create a new crust. Seafloor spreading happened at divergent plate boundaries. As the tectonic plates gradually move away from each other, the heat from the mantle's convection turns the crust to be more plastic and less dense.

How to Teach About Soil for 3rd Grade?

The purpose of teaching soil is for students to be able to understand the components of different layers, types, and function of it. The teacher needs to make sure that the learning activity will improve the student's critical thinking abilities. Think and Share methodology may help both the students and teachers in this case. Teachers also need to make sure to collect the appropriate data for the learning process. An explanation with a base of developing evidence will make the students understand the topic well. The most important thing to do is the extension class and the application. Teachers need to make sure that the students understand the lesson. Teachers can use the Soil Worksheets for 3rd Grade as learning media for the students.
