What is Music Notes?

In the music world, notes hold an essential role. Along with rests, notes are the permeation of the musical score. Notes represent the sounds or pitches that human ears grasp; the rest illustrates the sound we cannot hear. Even though we cannot listen to the rest, they are still part of and affect the music. Musicians use musical notation to help them play the music with their instruments. It is a visual form of imagined sounds and instruction to help performers perform their music.

Notes in the musical notation depict the pitch, pitch class, and duration. We can use the term "note" in a specific or generic sense. There are various terms for music notes depending on the origin country. In many European countries (Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Spain, Turkey, and Ukraine), people use the term solfège (do re mi fa sol la si). Meanwhile, in English and some regions in Dutch, people use A, B, C, D, E, F, and G to symbolize the notes. However, some countries replace the letter B with H. The Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium) used Pa, Vu, Ga, Di, Ke, Zo, and Ni for their notes. Another example is from Indian traditional music that uses svaras (Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, and Ni)

How Many Types of Music Notes Are There?

There are seven types of musical notes in the world of music (whole note, half note, quarter note, eight note, sixteenth note, thirty-second note, and sixty-fourth note). Below is a detailed explanation of each type:

  • Whole Note (Semibreve): Semibreve is a musical note with a value of two half or four quarter notes.
  • Half Note (Minim): Minim is a note played in half the semibreve duration or twice the crochet.
  • Quarter Note (Crochet): Crochet is a quarter of a whole tone (semibreve).
  • Eight Note (Quaver): Quaver is 1/8 of a semibreve and stays for half of one beat.
  • Sixteenth Note (Semiquaver): Semiquaver represents the half duration of a quaver (eight notes).
  • Thirty-Second Note (Demisemiquaver): Demisemiquaver is a note that last for one-eighth of a beat in a simple meter.
  • Sixty-Fourth Note (Hemidemisemiquaver): Hemidemisemiquaver is a note played for 1/64 of the time of the semibreve.

Why are Music Notes Important in Music?

As we learned in the previous paragraph, musical notes are the representation of the music sounds. Hence, we can conclude that they are an essential element in music. It is the building block of written melody, and it helps musician and performers to bring out their sounds for the world to hear. Understanding musical notes is vital knowledge and skill for people who work with music. It is the communication medium between the music to the musician. The notation will tell and guide the artist to decide what notes to play, at what pace, and other details that will affect the music they produce.

Modern music notation has five parallel horizontal lines. Those lines are the frame for the musician to write the notes. The beginner music student should remember that the lower the tone, the pitch will follow, and vice versa for the higher notes. We can also put the notes above or below the five lines and put a tiny stroke in the middle of the oval parts, known as ledger lines. To help the reader analyze the stave range, each of them is assigned in a clef.

What are the Perks of Learning Music?

It is challenging to define what music is since there was a shift in the definition over the past decades. Every country and culture has its definition and value of its pieces of music. It has a variety from the melody to the instruments, from the traditional to the modern. For centuries, music has been part of human lives. It is what gives people a sense of creativity and art. Nature itself is the original muse for the human to create their sounds. Many cultures in the world include music in their rituals and culture. It is the medium for them to communicate with mother nature and other humans or the mystical creatures they believe in. Those explanations were in line with what Charles Seeger (a musicologist) said: "Music is a system of communication that use sounds which are produced by a member of the community to communicate with others.
