What Does It Mean By Drugs?

In the original meaning, drug refers to the chemical substance that affects living creatures and organisms. Initially, drugs heal and fix the broken system in living creatures and organisms. The science field that focuses on these substances is known as pharmacology. However, nowadays, the following nuance for drugs is not as good as it used to be. Many frown upon this term because they think of the illegal use of drugs.

According to the Department of Health and Aged Care of the Australian Government, the drug is a substance that can change someone's physical and mental state. It will affect how the brain works and influence how someone feels, think, and behave. Hence, illegal and haphazard use of these chemical substances can risk someone's health and life. Unfortunately, there are various cases of drug and substance abuse, especially in the community of young people. There are many reasons why these teenagers and early adults consume drugs. It can start from curiosity or peer pressure. Some of them also try these substances because they think they can heal their anxiety and depression, which worsen their problems. Hence, parents, teachers, and other adults should pay attention to their kids, students, and other youngsters.

How Many Types of Drugs Are There?

As we all know the dangers of substance or drug abuse, we should learn various elements of it to help us protect our loved ones. We can divide these chemical substances into categories based on the dependants. In this chapter, we will talk about the types of drugs based on their effects on the human body:

  • Depressants: Depressants can slow down the speed of how the message from the brain to the body. It will affect your focus on behaving, thinking, and focusing.
  • Hallucinogens: Hallucinogens have the effect of changing a human's sense of seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, and feeling an object.
  • Stimulants: This type of substance will speed up the function of the central nervous system. It will make someone feel their heart beat faster, agitating, lose appetite, stay awake, rising blood pressure and body temperature.
  • Dissociative Anesthetics: This anesthetic will cause the brain to stop sending the pain by cutting off (dissociating) the brain's perception of the pain feeling.
  • Narcotic Analgesics: It makes people relieve pain and produce a euphoric feeling to change up the mood of the consumer. 
  • Inhalants: Inhalants will produce a mind-altering effect for the user.
  • Cannabis: Cannabis can make a person feel happy and euphoric. However, it will be followed by anxiety, fear, and nervousness.

How Do People Consume Drugs?

As there are many types of drugs, there are various methods of how people consume them. People can swallow or drink them up, and the body absorbs them through the stomach lining. Breathing them into the lungs or snorting them into the nose also becomes an alternative for some people to consume the drugs. Some people also inject the substances and let them flow into their bloodstream. There is also a cream and patch method where people apply it to their skins until absorbed. However, no matter how someone consumes these illegal substances, they will still damage their brains and health. Knowing the various ways of drug consumption will make us aware of our surroundings. 

Why are Drugs Dangerous for Health?

Everyone has a problem in their life that might drive them insane. Stress, anxiety, and depression feel so common in nowadays society because of the hectic life that we encounter every day. It is so disheartening that even the youngsters are facing this crisis. At the age where they are supposed to have fun while experiencing many experiences, society pressures them on everything. This condition can lead some of these young people to pick an unjust choice of coping mechanism, such as substance or drug abuse.

However, we know that drugs can cause extreme danger for humans. It can cause addiction which furtherly damages the brain and body. Consuming these illegal substances can make a person behave without thoughts and risk their safety. Some dangerous effects are worsening mental health, losing brain function, overdose, infectious disease, damaged body, and ruined life.

How to Prevent Drug Abuse?

  • Make a strong will inside our hearts that we will not be wavering or negative peer pressure.
