This state has the largest region after Alaska. Texas has 261,268.2 square miles in width and more than 29 million population. Some borders of this state are water areas. Texas has 97.26% land area, and the rest 2.74 is water site. The capital city of Texas is Austin, and the biggest city is Houston. 

Texas shares boundaries with the states of Louisiana (east), Arkansas(northeast), Oklahoma (north), New Mexico(west), and the Mexican states (south and southwest); and has a coastline with the Gulf of Mexico (southeast). Texas is known for its richness in culture and diversity. This state has a solid tradition of ranching. They have an influence on America's cowboy culture, such as rodeo.

  • Lone Star State is Texas's nickname. The origin behind this name is that when Texas declared itself an independent nation in 1836, it used a flag with one star.
  • Texas BBQ is the most famous kind of BBQ cooking.
  • Austin City in Texas is known as Live-Music Capital because they are full of free live-music venues.
  • Texas came from the Spanish word (Tay-yas), which means friends.

What is the History of Texas?

In the 1500s, Texas was the home of the Caddos, Karankawa, Comanche, and Apache, Native American tribes. The Caddos are farmers who grow corn and sunflowers. The Karankawa people have talents in fishing and making canoes for water travel. Commanche is the master in hunting and an excellent horseman. Meanwhile, Apache was proactive and lived in wikiups or teepees. The Europeans (Spanish) arrived in Texas around 1519. It was around the 1600s when the Europeans started to settle in Texas while spreading Catholic missions.

Texas (as part of Mexico) gained independence from Spain in 1821. However, Texas and Mexico had an intense battle in 1835. The winner of this battle was Texas. It led Texas to join the United States because they believed America could protect them from Mexico. These results ignited a war between Mexico and the United States. When Civil War happened in 1861, Texas joined Confederacy. It was readmitted as America's state in 1870.
