What Does It Mean by Social Studies?

It is the nature of humans to study and analyze their surroundings. Curiosity is a behavior that cannot be separated from humans, as it keeps us exploring and discovering various things on Earth.

It is the objective application of knowledge and learning of natural and social fields through a systematic procedure based on fact or evidence. There are three branches of sciences: formal, natural, and social. Formal science refers to study that relates to logic and mathematics.

Natural science means the knowledge of biological objects and events on Earth and around it. Lastly, social studies is a study of humanities and human relationships with each other. In this article, we will discuss the latter type. 

What are the Five Components of Social Studies Are There?

As we learn from the previous part, social studies is the branch of science that focuses on learning about humanities, society, and everything inside it. It is still broad knowledge, which means the experts should divide it into some chunks depending on the concentration and content of the study. According to the American Historical Association, there are five subjects or components of social studies:

  • History: According to Valdosta State University, history is a study about the change over time. It covers a wide range of humans, cultures, societies, places, politics, economy, technology, medicine, and more. The study of history divides learning based on particular events in specific periods.

  • Geography: It is a branch of social studies that comprehends the Earth and every occurrence that happens on it. Geography also learns how humans and nature affect each other. This knowledge helps us to understand the place we live in.

  • Civics: Civics is a study that focuses on the rights and obligations of humans in societies based on the legal and running laws and regulations. It helps humans to be a proper and respectful member of the community.

  • Economics: According to The Economic Times, economics refers to the study of scarcity and how it impacts the use of resources, the production of goods and services, the growth of it and well-being over the period, and complicated issues that affect society.

  • Sociology: Sociology refers to the component of social studies that learn about human and their relationship with each other.

 

How to Teach Social Studies to Students?

Teaching and learning social studies are fun activities for students and teachers, even though it can be challenging. The students will study various things and events that happen around them. The teacher can apply many learning methods and strategies to help the students learn social studies. They can choose which is the most suitable technique for their students. In this part, we will learn the five steps of social studies learning.

The students will start their lesson by actively gathering information from various sources. It will help them acquire the knowledge foundation. Then, the learners will ask questions to the teachers about something they want to know about the lecture. The students need a small and proper observation project to help them relate the lesson to real life.

The teacher should also explain while correcting the students' understanding. The last step is to let the students have a discussion activity to help them learn from each other and train their logical and critical thinking abilities.

Why is Learning Social Studies Important for the Students?

Every study field has its purpose or goal. It is no different with social studies. As one of the science branches, the students learn about social studies and its elements since they are young. It is essential because social studies teach learners to become proper citizens who understand the law and everything that happens around them. This study also guides youngsters to become respectful human beings who appreciate others and value the differences in society. Learning social studies also helps students develop empathy, logical reasoning, and critical thinking ability.

How to Improve Students' Knowledge of Social Studies?

Learning social studies might be challenging for some students. It is the task of parents and teachers to help the struggling learners find the fun while learning. There are various ways to help learners improve their knowledge of social studies. One of the most essential is the motivation.

Parents and teachers should encourage the students and also guide them to learn gently. The adults should find the reasons for their behavior in the lesson. Guide the learners to see the study from different points of view to help them understand the learning. Using various learning mediums also helps to increase motivation.

There are three branches of science that humans should study: formal, natural, and social. Social studies is the study of humanities and human relationships with each other. Social studies consist of five components which are history, geography, civics, economics, and sociology. Learning social studies will guide youngsters to become respectful human beings who appreciate others and value the differences in society.
