What is Sewing?

Have you ever tried to sew? Sewing is a craft activity of attaching objects by using a needle and thread. Various things could be made through sewing, however, one of the most common things that every one of us is familiar with is clothes. Even though it can also be found on our other daily items, such as bags, dolls, scarves, purses, blankets, and more.

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, sewing means the skill to make or repair clothes or other things by using needles and thread. Traditionally, people will manually put the thread through the tiny hole of the needle. Nowadays, people usually use the sewing machine which is more easy and effective, especially for the business owner. Even though some people usually still do manual sewing when they fix their home clothes.

Types of Various Sewing Techniques

As one of the branches of crafting activity, sewing also has various techniques to make various things as well. Out of so many techniques, here are four of the most popular ones:

  • Running Stitch: Running stitch is the most common technique of all sewing stitches. This stitch works by passing through the sewing needle in and out of the clothes. Depending on the things you want to make, the running stitch can vary in length, however, this type of technique is mainly used to sew basic seams and in quilting to hold the fabric layers and wadding to stay in place.

  • Lockstitch: Lockstitch is a sewing technique that is usually used by a sewing machine with a single needle. This technique requires the needle to pass through the fabric and interact with a bobbin or boat shuttle beneath the clothes material.  This technique leads to a strong stitch that can be used on any piece of clothing where there is a seam, such as shirts and blankets.

  • Coverstitch: Coverstitch could be said as the most popular sewing technique for a sewing machine with various needles because it requires some needles and loopers. This technique is perfect for making things with firm stitches, such as garment construction.

  • Overlock: Some people also refer to overlock stitch as a serger stitch, and it is usually used on multiple needles sewing machines. The most common use for the overlock stitch is on seams in stretchy fabrics, and for protecting edges from unraveling.
