Improve your social skills through these Free Communication Worksheets!

What is Communication?

As a social living creature, communication is essential for human daily life. It is the link for each human to connect. It is the bridge for the information and messages they send and receive to each other.

So, what is communication? According to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, communication is a process that involves understanding, sharing, and meaning. It is a two-way activity where two or more people share information. Hence, there should be the role of information giver and taker.

As essential life skills, parents usually teach their kids about communication as young as possible. This moment is vital because what kids learn at a young age will affect their communication ability as adults. There are eight communication components.

  • Source,
  • Message,
  • Channel,
  • Receiver,
  • Feedback,
  • Environment,
  • Context,
  • Interference.

The source is the person who gives the information. The message is the content of the communication. Channel is the way information travels and moves between the speaker and listener. The receiver is the person who accepts the information from the source.

Feedback is the reaction from the receiver to the source. The environment is the atmosphere (physical or psychological) when someone receives a message. Last but not least, the context of communication includes the setting, scene, and expectations of the communicators.

What are The Indicators of Good Communication?

Communication is human daily activities. Whether we communicate directly or through technology, it is an activity that helps people send and receive information that helps them in education, work, or daily conversation. However, even though it is a customary activity, not every communication is effective.

What is effective communication? It is a process for exchanging messages, ideas, or opinions with the purpose the receiver accepts with the same intent as the source when they give it. This procedure will minimize the risk of miscommunication between the receiver and the source.

The National Institute of Health mentioned three indicators of effective communication, trust, emotion, and reason. All the partakers of communication should trust each other to minimize the gap between them. Emotion is also essential because it will affect how the receiver accepts the information.

Lastly, communication should have a reasonable foundation. In conclusion, we should remember that it takes various elements to build effective communication and requires a lot of time and practice.

Why Should We Build an Effective Communication?

Having the ability to engage in effective communication is something that will benefit your life. It will impact how you deliver the information you have and how you accept the message you seek.

Effective communication also helps people to minimize the probability of misunderstandings while exchanging ideas or opinions. There are various benefits to mastering effective communication. Below are some of them:

  • It will increase the trust between people who communicate.
  • It will tighten the bond between members of a community or group.
  • It improves the engagement between the partakers.
  • Effective communication helps people to improve productivity.
  • It will resolve issues and problems.
  • It will help people avoid misunderstandings.

  • It will guide people to increase their self-awareness.
  • Effective communication is the element of a healthy relationship.

How to Build Effective Communication?

As we learned before about the essentiality of effective communication, it has a vital role in our social life. We know it can help us to resolve various conflicts and problems.

However, you might wonder how to build effective communication. There are many ways of creating effective communication. You can follow our suggestions below:

  • Speak or express your messages clearly. Do not rush yourself because it will make others unable to grasp your points.
  • Watch your audience and decide the best method to deliver your message. You cannot speak to a five-year-old kid the same way you talk to a college student.
  • Remember that communication is a two-way activity! Do not forget to involve the other person in your talk.
  • Hold appropriate eye contact with the other person to create an emotion in the message you receive or deliver.
  • Ask for feedback from the other person.

How to Improve Self-Confidence in Communication?

Even though we know the importance of communication, it is not a secret that engaging in one might not be everyone's favorite. Some people might feel nervous, anxious, and overwhelmed when they should speak or interact with others. This condition might burden some people.

Here are some tips to improve self-confidence in communication:

  • Practice talking in front of a mirror or writing in your journal.
  • Prepare what you want to say beforehand.
  • Do not look down when you are engaging in a talk.
  • It is okay to ask questions.
  • Observes how others communicate and take note of their behavior.
