  • Effect: A clause answers the question "What happened?" and begins with causal linking, linking words, or signal words. The effect can also be replaced with other nouns.

 

If cause and effect are found in a paragraph, you can identify cause and effect through these characteristics.

  • There is a main idea in the text.
  • There are supporting details or supporting sentences (causes).
  • Some consequences become the conclusion.
