What is a Short Story?

The short story is one of the earliest complex literature kids encounter. Since they were born, parents or other family members might tell the babies various kinds of short stories. According to Oxford University, a short story focuses more on one event with limited characters (maybe one to three characters). The Penguin Publisher stated that the term "short story" has a link to the words from French, Spanish, Italian, and German. Some believe that the Bible has some of the first short stories. In making a short story, the writer delivers a particular mood or feeling to the readers instead of a narrative arc.  

What is the Text Structure of a Short Story?

A short story is part of the narrative text because it tells an event with some characters. A short story is a fiction work, meaning the event and the cast do not exist in real life. However, the writer can make it based on real moments.

To make a correct short story fiction, we should master the structure of a narrative text. The text structure is the arrangement of a literature piece. Understanding the organization of the text will help the writer to focus on the writing activity and making a draft story.

The narrative text aims to tell the readers the sequence of events, characters, time and place setting, and plot. Hence, the structure text of the short story is orientation, complication, and resolution.

Orientation is the beginning of the story. It introduces the readers to the fiction's characters, time and place setting, and plot. Proper orientation will determine whether the reader will continue to finish the story or neglect it.

The complication is part of the writing where the author writes about the challenge the main characters should pass. Usually, this part consists of some series of events. Lastly, the resolution is part of the story where the plot ends (it can be a happy, sad, or open ending). Some people refer to this part as a denouement.       

What are the Elements of a Short Story?

Short stories and other narrative texts have elements that make them unique and different from other texts. There are five elements of a short story (character, setting, plot, conflict, and theme).

Character is the cast of the story. It can be human, animal, or even inanimate objects. There are two types of settings, time and place. The time setting is to tell the readers when the event happened; meanwhile, the place setting tells about where the event occurred. The plot is the succession of events in the story.

Conflict is the clash between the protagonist with the antagonist. This element is the driver and controller of the story plot. The theme is the principal idea of faith in the text. It delivers the moral value and message from the writer to the audience. Mastering the five elements of narrative text will help the author to make an eye-catching story.                 

How to Sequence Short Story?

In reading fiction, the reader should be able to do sequencing. It is the ability to link between each element and part. Being able to sequence the short story helps the reader to connect the storyline in their head.

The teacher can use story sequences as a lesson in English class as it will help the students in various aspects. Understanding this ability will guide the students to grasp the message of the short story text. It is also an essential comprehension strategy to read narrative text.
