Understand normal and abnormal chromosomes in human DNA through Karyotype Worksheet Answers Biology!

What is Karyotype?

When talking about DNA, we must also discuss karyotypes. What is a karyotype? It is a method for identifying the size, number, and shape of chromosomes in each individual. So, each person has different chromosomes and a karyotype is needed to identify these chromosome variations.

The number of chromosomes in humans is 46 or 23 pairs consisting of 22 pairs of autosomes and one pair of gonosomes. Autosomes are chromosomes that are not related to sex. Meanwhile, gonosomes are the X and Y chromosomes that are related to sex.

So, what if the number of chromosomes in humans is incomplete? If a person has an incomplete number of chromosomes, it causes genetic disorders. So, it is important to do a karyotype to find out the number of chromosomes.

Karyotypes are also used in the fields of taxonomy, medicine, and to gather information about evolution. Karyotyping is a molecular technique that was first applied in 1950. When it was first used, scientists used this technique to find simple abnormalities in chromosomes such as missing chromosomes. Now, karyotyping has been developed and new methods are used to identify chromosomal abnormalities.

Why is Karyotype Important?

Karyotypes are important because they can be used to analyze chromosomes. Karyotype is a method used to identify chromosomal or DNA abnormalities so that we can find out the cause of the abnormality. Several types of disorders that can be identified using karyotypes are blood disorders, genetic disorders, birth defects, and lymphatic system disorders.

To detect these abnormalities, metaphase chromosome analysis from blood lymphocyte cultures is needed. This kind of test is usually recommended for people undergoing IVF, men with sperm disorders, and people with reproductive disorders.

So, karyotyping is very important, especially for people with the following conditions.

  • People who plan to have children but have a history of genetic disorders, are over 35 years old or have abnormal prenatal screening results.
  • People who have a family history of genetic disorders want to know the risk of developing that genetic disorder.
  • People who have symptoms of genetic disorders and want to get the right diagnosis.
  • People who are diagnosed with a blood disorder and want to get the right treatment.

How to Do a Karyotype Test?

To do a karyotype test, you must go to a medical center first. Then, explain to the medical staff your purpose for the karyotype test. They will direct you to the laboratory to take blood samples. In the process of taking blood samples, the procedures that must be carried out are:

  • Wrap an elastic belt around the arm to make it easier for medical staff to inject the needle into a blood vessel.
  • Clean the part to be injected using alcohol.
  • Injecting a needle into a blood vessel.
  • Remove the elastic belt from the arm.
  • Apply cotton to the injection site and place a bandage on the area.

You need to discuss with your doctor what is needed during the test, the risks, and the test procedures. You should consult directly with a genetic specialist (geneticist) or genetic counselor because they understand the information from the karyotype. So, they can provide analysis regarding your karyotype test results.

After the karyotype test, you can remove the bandage from your arm after 20-30 minutes post-test. You will also get information about when you can get the test results. Usually, karyotype test results can be obtained after 1-2 weeks. If you have received test results from a doctor, you need to follow the doctor's instructions.

What Diseases Can Be Identified Through a Karyotype Test?

Some diseases that can be identified through karyotypes are:

  • Down Syndrome: Down syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by failure of gamete cell division in the process of meiosis I or II. So, there is an excess of chromosome 21. For this reason, Down Syndrome is also known as Trisomy 21. As a result of this disorder, a person can experience delays in mental and physical development such as a short body, small eyes, and small ears.

  • Turner Syndrome: This is also a genetic disorder. However, Turner syndrome affects girls. The cause is loss or damage to the X chromosome, resulting in girls suffering from liver disease, and short body and neck problems.

  • Klinefelter Syndrome: This syndrome affects boys. The main characteristic is the presence of one X chromosome on the XY chromosome (XXY). It causes delayed puberty and infertility.

What is Karyotype Worksheet Answers Biology?
