Summary: A comma is a tool to separate words, phrases or clauses to avoid misinterpretation while reading. A comma is an essential punctuation mark because it helps many people as readers and writers. It helps people to read in an appropriate rhythm and avoid tiredness. Writers also use commas to emphasize a point in their text. The current coma we use today is reformation from diagonal slash (/), which used to represent a pause in 13th to 17th-century literature. The founder of the modern comma is Aldus Manutius.

What is Punctuation Mark?

In reading and writing, punctuation marks are essential as they can help the writer and reader. People can level up their writing by adding intensity and tempo using the punctuation mark. Although these elements look simple, many people (even adults) are confused about how to use punctuation marks correctly. Hence, learning punctuation marks from a young is essential, and parents should introduce their children to this linguistic system as early as possible.

We can define a punctuation mark as a group of conventional symbols or characters to divide a text into sentences, clauses and words. According to the University of People, there are fourteen (14) kinds of punctuation marks. The university divides them into five categories:

  1. A sentence ending: Period (.), question mark (?) and exclamation point (!)
  2. Clause or word divider: Comma (,), colon (:), and semicolon (;)
  3. Words connector: Hyphen (-) and dash (en dash (–) and em dash (—)
  4. Explanators: Brackets ([]), braces ({}) and parentheses ( () )

How to Explain Commas and the Rules of It?

In this part, we will discuss one of the most familiar punctuation marks in linguistics, the comma (,). We can find commas with ease in every text. For example, in this paragraph, you are reading right now, you have encounter with five commas. Do you realize it? You can read the previous sentences one more time and feel how the comma (,) affects your rhythm in reading. Based on the Butte College, a comma is a tool to separate words, phrases or clauses to avoid misinterpretation while reading. It also works as a pause when someone reads the text out loud, giving the speaker time to adjust their breath. Below are some English linguistic rules for using commas:

  1. Apply commas to divide independent clauses by putting them before coordinating conjunctions such as and, yet, but, so, or, nor, and for.
  2. Use a comma after a preceding clause or phrase.
  3. Put a comma between many items in a series of words, clauses or phrases.
  4. Use commas to encompass unnecessary clauses to the meaning of a sentence.
  5. Apply a comma to set off appositives (noun or noun phrases that change the names of other nouns).
  6. Use commas to refer to a direct address.
  7. Use commas to refer to make a direct quotation.
  8. Put commas to write numbers, dates, addresses and titles.

Who is the Founder of Comma?

A comma is an essential punctuation mark because it helps many people as readers and writers. It helps people to read in an appropriate rhythm and avoid tiredness. Writers also use commas to emphasize a point in their text. The founder of the comma is Aristophanes in the 3rd century of BC. He suggests that readers can put dots in their text while reading. He proposed three dots to put in the middle (subordinate), top (intermediate) and bottom (full) of the line. He used these dots to divide verses and help people to manage their breathing while reading a text. It is not the comma we use nowadays, but his concept ignites the flame for another linguist to create more punctuation marks. The current coma we use today is reformation from diagonal slash (/), which used to represent a pause in 13th to 17th-century literature. The founder of the modern comma is Aldus Manutius.

How to Teach Young Students about Commas?

Teaching young students about commas (,) might be challenging for parents or teachers. At first, the students should understand the concept of the comma before they practice how to apply them. Parents and teachers could introduce the students to various texts to familiarize them with commas. Ask the students what they think the comma means. Guide them and introduce them to the shape and the function of it. For students at the higher level, the teachers can use complex or compound sentences as examples. Ensure the students understand how and where to apply the comma mark. Teachers or parents could also use various mediums to help the students study, such as games, worksheets, storybooks, and more.

Why is Learning Punctuation Mark Important?

Some people might overlook the essence of mastering the use of punctuation marks. However, using asterisks properly in the text could maximize the readers' understanding of the text. It also helps the reader to avoid misunderstanding and miscommunication. A lack of knowledge of punctuation marks will lead a writer to produce poor-quality text. Even though the content is weighty, without proper punctuation marks, the text will lack quality and be difficult to understand by the readers. Hence, learning punctuation marks will improve someone's linguistic skills as a writer or reader.
