Summary: Behavior means the response to external or internal stimuli. It is how someone acts to achieve their goal or to change something. Internal stimuli that can affect behavior are thoughts and feelings. There are many ways to classify human behavior, and different frameworks may offer different classifications. Understanding the type of behavior that we or others do will help us to determine what is the correct thing to do according to a particular situation.

What Does it Mean by Behavior in Psychology?

According to the American Psychological Association (APA), behavior means the response to external or internal stimuli. It is how someone acts to achieve their goal or to change something. Internal stimuli that can affect behavior are thoughts and feelings. Meanwhile, examples of external stimuli are the environment, situation, and the acts of other people. Human behavior has a purpose and reason, such as communication (using body language, facial expression, or gestures) and function (achieving goals, attracting attention, grasping the internal or sensory sensation, accessing something, or getting away from something). Most of the time, humans feel difficulty in understanding the behavior. Meanwhile, the correct method to understand it is by finding out the reasons and communicating them. In conclusion, behavior is how someone acts because of external or internal stimuli.

How Many Types of Behavior Are There?

There are many ways to classify human behavior, and different frameworks may offer different classifications. Understanding the type of behavior that we or others do will help us to determine what is the correct thing to do according to a particular situation. Here are four broad types of behavior that are commonly recognized:

  • Prosocial BehaviorProsocial behavior refers to actions that benefit others or society. It includes acts of kindness, cooperation, sharing, empathy, and altruism. Helping someone in need, volunteering, or donating to charity are examples of prosocial.
  • Antisocial Behavior: Antisocial behavior is harmful, disruptive, or disrespectful actions toward others. It is the antonym of prosocial. Aggression, violence, lying, cheating, stealing, and breaking norms are examples of antisocial. People with antisocial behavior usually will accept the consequence from society.
  • Adaptive Behavior: Adaptive behavior refers to actions that allow individuals to navigate and adjust to their environment negatively. It confines a range of skills and behaviors necessary for everyday matters, such as problem-solving, decision-making, communication, time management, and self-regulation. Adaptive behavior encourages people to achieve their goals and adjust to new circumstances.
  • Maladaptive Behavior: Maladaptive behavior refers to actions or patterns of behavior that are ineffective, detrimental, or counterproductive in achieving desired outcomes. It may include self-destructive behaviors, addictive behaviors, excessive procrastination, and more. Maladaptive behavior often requires intervention or support to address and overcome.

  • Learning more about how people believe, act, and feel can support nation-building actions and make more pleasant social associations. Understanding how to encourage others, increasing productivity, and building high commissions are three critical aspects when we discuss understanding human behavior.

How to Handle Teenagers' Behavior?

Many parents agree with the statement that having a teenage child is extra challenging. It is hard to understand what they want, and you do not know how to talk with them without them getting angry or upset. Parents should be patient and try to listen and see a problem from their point of view to understand their feelings. Allow your teen to realize their wrongdoings and have them learn from them.
