It is a complete story with an apparent plot and characters and can be finished in one sitting. The famous American writer, Edgar Allan Poe, described short stories as literature that people can complete in half to two hours in one sitting. Based on contemporary fiction, a short story usually consist of 1.000 to 20.000 words. Different from a novel, with more than 40.000 words minimum, a short story is the compact version of a novel book. It focuses only on one main plot and consists of a few characters only.

A short story is an appropriate medium for children to study, as it has a brief length, and many genres are suitable for them. It will help the kids to improve their linguistic and logical thinking skills. There are many types of short stories parents or teachers can introduce to the kids, such as fables, fairy tales, telltales, drabbles, anecdotes or sketch stories.

What are the Elements of Short Stories There?

Many children love to hear or read a short story in their time, especially if it has an appealing plot and piques their interest. This narrative literature can help young children develop many abilities and skills, primarily linguistic skill development. Below are the elements of a short story based on the Writing Center of San Jose State University to help young students learn:

  • Characters: Characters are the symbols or the doer in the story. They keep the plot to keep moving. Humans, animals, creatures and objects can be characters in fiction literature.
  • POV: POV stands for Point of View, which refers to the view the readers will see in the story. There are first, second and third-person POVs in fiction.
  • Dialogue: It is an interactive conversation between the characters in the story. 
  • Plot: Plot is the description of what happened in the story. It helps the writer to deliver their message and assists the readers in understanding the story.
  • Place and Time Settings: These elements help the readers to know where and when the story takes place and time. 

How to Teach Second-Grade Students to Find the Main Idea of A Paragraph?

Recognizing the main idea of a paragraph is essential to understand the message of a text. It helps the readers to grasp the point of what they read. Sometimes, the writer puts it at the beginning or end of the paragraph. However, the main idea is not consistently clearly written. Sometimes, the readers should look into the text to find the implied message from the writer. It can be the summary of some sentences in the paragraph or the drawn facts, hints, reasons and examples. Some tip for finding the main idea is to ask yourself about the 5W+1H (what, when, why, who, where and how) in the paragraph or text. 

How to Help Students Improving Their Writing Ability?

Writing is one of the four linguistic skills students should master, along with reading, listening and speaking. It is an essential skill to help students in their academic journey. Reading a short story is one of the suitable starters to prepare for the writing journey for children. It will help the young kids recognize sentence patterns and how to arrange words correctly. The parents and teachers can guide the kids and as the place if they have questions to ask.
