Practice your writing with these Kindergarten Sentence Practice Worksheets!

Summary: A sentence is a group of words. It asserts expressions or ideas in statements, questions, instructions or exclamations. It usually begins with a capital or uppercase letter. Parents and teachers should guide the students to learn how to build sentences. Sentence building is a practice to help students arrange and structure their words in the correct grammatical rule.

What is a Sentence?

Reading and writing abilities are essential for young students to flourish in their literacy proficiency. The students should master and understand line after line of many passages in a text. A sentence is an essential part of the text. A group of sentences could create a paragraph, and a group of them resulted in a text. Once the young kids finish memorizing the alphabet, they will learn about words. Then they will practice assembling the words into clauses and simple sentences. According to the Cambridge dictionary, a sentence is a crowd of words. It asserts expressions or ideas in statements, questions, instructions or exclamations. It usually begins with a capital or uppercase letter.

Mastering sentence skills will help children practice their literacy skills and enable them to start reading by themselves. Sentence skills are the ability of someone to create and understand sentences. Having sentence skills will help the students to study better because they will understand the material. There are various topics included in the sentence skills (structure of a sentence, subject, predicate, object, punctuation marks, capitalization, verbs, pronouns, and more).

How to Teach Writing Sentences to Young Students?

Parents and teachers should guide the students to learn how to build sentences. Sentence building is a practice to help students arrange and structure their words in the correct grammatical rule. In this exercise, the students should understand where to put the subject and verbs and how to use proper punctuation marks. Arranging an appropriate sentence will help young students express and convey their ideas clearly and logically.

Learning new knowledge might make the students nervous and anxious. Hence, parents and teachers should teach the kids about clauses before diving into sentences. A clause is a group of words which encompass a subject and verb. A clause is what builds a sentence. Based on the McLaughlin library of Guelph University, there are two types of clauses (dependent and independent). A dependent clause has a verb and subject but cannot settle as a single sentence. An independent clause has a verb and subject and can stand alone as a sentence. Repetition is the key to practising. Hence, the parents and teachers should guide and encourage the students to practice sentence building over and over until they master it.

What are the Types of Sentences?

Students should be able to arrange complete sentences to express their ideas and thoughts. Complete sentences consist of at least a subject and predicate. The subject is the noun (person, place, or thing) which carries out the action. Predicate is the clause which explains the activity. A complete sentence begins with an uppercase letter and a punctuation mark (period, exclamation point or question mark) at the end. There are four types of sentences:

  1. Declarative Sentences: Declarative sentences are the most prevailing sentence in English. It creates a statement, gives facts, proposes an explanation and relays information. They end with a period (.).
  2. Exclamatory Sentences: Some people call them exclamation sentences because they express a powerful emotion.
  3. Imperative Sentences: The main characteristic of imperative sentences is they do not have a subject. It is a command or instruction, an order, direction, invitation, request, or warning.
  4. Interrogative Sentences: Interrogative sentence or question usually starts with the "wh" words (what, who, why, when, where, which, and whom). It is used to collect or gain information from other people.

Why Should Young Students Practice Writing Sentences?

Learning to write is the bridge connecting oral language to print. It is the next level step of literacy learning for young children. The writing ability will help the kids voice out their idea and thought. Below are the perks of sentence writing for children:

  1. Comprehend the form of printed oral language.
  2. Knowing each element of a sentence.
  3. Trying to understand the meaning and value of a text.
  4. Developing the children's literacy abilities.
  5. Helping the students to communicate in a proper way.
  6. Encouraging young children to read.
  7. Developing eye-to-hand coordination.
  8. Establish fine motoric skills.

What Skills do the Children Need to Practice Writing?

From the four language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening), many experts agree that writing is the most challenging skill to master. Let alone children; many adults struggle to arrange a proper and grammatically correct sentence. Parents and teachers should prepare their children to have adequate writing learning. Before the children learn how to make a sentence, there are skills they need to master. Being able to read is the primary skill to prepare the students to learn how to write. It is because the vocabulary knowledge would support the children to write various things and help them to express their intention better. The children also need to be able to do transcription (handwriting, typing, and spelling). Constructing an appropriate phrase is also helpful to make the kids have smooth writing practice. Teachers and parents should introduce the types of sentences and texts; so the children know how to express them correctly. The children also should be taught to plan, revise, edit and regulate their text to achieve excellent writing skills.
