Summary: Elapsed time is the period or contrast between the start and the end time. Finding elapsed time is a necessary skill in everyday life. To decide the elapsed time, the student must master how to read a clock and measure time. The formula for counting the elapsed time is to divide the subtraction of hours and minutes. This method will determine the period of the activity.

What is Elapsed Time?

Time is one of the essential entities in our life. The ticking of the clock tightly tied us throughout our daily activities. Many of our parents always highlighted how paramount it is to treasure and respect time since we would never get those slipping seconds back. Even one of the most sayings in human history is about time "time is money". Hence, it is no surprise that as parents or teachers, we should teach our children and students about time. There are various kinds of lessons about time children can learn, and elapsed time is one of them. Elapsed time is the period or contrast between the start and the end time. Finding elapsed time is a necessary skill in everyday life. To decide the elapsed time, the student must master how to read a clock and measure time. This lesson is important because we typically do not use the traditional decimal (base 10) timekeeping system.

How to Teach Elapsed Time to Young Learners?

Sometimes, some students must feel too overwhelmed with how they crammed so many lessons in one day. You could turn your class to something that will cheer them up. Remind the children that elapsed time is the period from one mark in time to another. Explain that they can measure elapsed time by calculating up or using a clock, stopwatch, website or app through the internet. Instruct the children to use a stopwatch or digital stopwatch to count the time it takes to finish a simple action such as walking, jumping across the room or erasing the whiteboard. Advise your students that they can calculate the elapsed time in seconds, minutes, hours, days and even years.

The teacher also can teach the students through a story to ensure they understand the concept of elapsed time. Ask the students about the meaning of the passage of time. How do we use time in our daily lives? How can we plan the day and budget? How does knowing the elapsed time help you plan when to leave? Help your students know that calculating elapsed time can help them plan their day to be more organized. Use the 4th Grade Elpased Time Worksheets to help the students practice their knowledge.

What is the Formula for Elapsed Time?

Elapsed time is the amount of time it takes for an event to happen between the start and the end of time. We can find the elapsed time by subtracting the finish and begin times. The formula for counting the elapsed time is to divide the subtraction of hours and minutes. This method will determine the period of the activity. Teach the students to write the elapsed time in two forms, twelve-hour (AM and PM) and twenty-four-hour (hours and minutes). You can simplify the problem by dividing the time into hourly units. For example, an event started at 8:30 and ended at 15:40. Then we can determine the elapsed time as:

  • 15-8= 7 (hours)
  • 40-30= 10 (minutes)
  • Results: 7 hours 10 minutes

Why Should We Learn Time?

In her interview with UNICEF, Dr Pia Britto explained that the essential phase of a human's life is the first few years when they are still a child. At this time, the human brain develops fascinatingly and splendidly. The brain will create a connection every second. This moment will be the most effective time for children to learn many things. One of the things that young kids need to study is about time. Mastering how to read time is a necessary skill for humans. This skill will help to decide and plan the schedule of your day. Mastering reading time will develop the motor and cognitive abilities of the children and improve their mathematical competence.

When Should Children Learn Time?

As early as 1st grade, when your child is about 6 or 7 years old, you can teach them how to read an analogue clock. It is the age when they begin to understand the passage of time and the concept of past, present and future. Children have the necessary math skills to read a clock. Learning this ability takes time. In the 1st grade, the kids can read out time in 1 1/2 hour increments. In the 2nd grade, they can read out time in 5-minute increments. It can take up to 8 years to master the whole time-telling learning. The teacher can use the 4th Grade Elapsed Time Worksheets to help the children practice their knowledge.

What are the Steps of Teaching Time?

To ensure the students absorb the learning material, parents and teachers should choose the correct steps for their teaching activity. Before starting the learning activity, the adults should prepare suitable learning material for the children. Below are the steps on how to teach time:

  1. Analyze the parts of the clock.
  2. Teach them to read the hand of the hour.
  3. Teach them from the scope of hour, half-hour, and intervals of five minutes.
  4. Create fun and full of engagement for the students to avoid boredom.
