Boost your linguistic skill through these 9th Grade Vocabulary Worksheets!

Summary: Vocabulary is the existing word in a particular language. It is the component that someone should master in the beginning when they learn a new language. There are four types of vocabulary (writing, reading, speaking, and listening). Vocabulary is essential in learning a language. It will help the students to practice making and producing a correct sentence in the grammatical sense.

What is the Definition of Vocabulary?

Language is an element that is tied so tightly to human life. We cannot escape them as we ought them as the communication tool. Whereby communication is the medium for humans to connect and understand each other. Currently, there are around 6.500 languages recorded in this world, and there is a possibility there are still more. In every language, one of the most essential elements of it is vocabulary.

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, vocabulary is the existing word in a particular language. It is the component that someone should master in the beginning when they learn a new language. Without vocabulary, people cannot use the language at all. The term "vocabulary" derives from the Latin word "vocabulum", which means word or name. In the 1700s, there was a shift of meaning where vocabulary refers to someone's knowledge of words. Vocabulary will help people to express and convey their ideas and opinion to others.

How Many Types of Vocabulary Are There?

Vocabulary means words that people should memorize to use a particular language to communicate. Hence, English teachers usually encourage students to grasp as much as vocabularies they can. Parents also will teach their young children to read and understand many words. Vocabulary plays an essential role in helping students in reading practice and contributes to a reader's understanding. Without vocabulary knowledge, people can't use the language to communicate properly.

Mark Wollacott from Language Humanities stated that in the English language, there are four types of vocabulary (writing, reading, speaking, and listening). There are many ways to categorize vocabularies; for example, we can divide them by grammatical classes (adjectives, nouns, and verbs). We can also separate them based on categories like colors, animals, fruits, and others. However, the four types of vocabulary are the most known type in the linguistic field.

Reading vocab is passive because the readers understand the words by reading them through a text. It means the person should be able to spell the words and know the meaning of the word. Listening vocabulary also refers to passive because the listener should be able to connect the words they hear to the meaning. The knowledge of word context and the speaker's intonation will affect this understanding. Writing vocab is an active vocabulary because the writer should be able to express their thoughts through a scribble. Last but not least, speaking vocabularies are also active because the speaker should form a proper sentence to deliver their opinions.

Why is Mastering Vocabulary Important?

We all know how essential vocabularies are to help humans communicate and express their ideas and thoughts. Hence, students should learn as early as possible to master vocabulary. Rodrigo Tovar Viera from Universidad Técnica de Cotopaxi (UTC) stated in his paper that vocabulary is essential in learning a language. It will help the students to practice making and producing a correct sentence in the grammatical sense. This ability will be beneficial when they should make an educational paper or formal speech. It will also help them to understand the lesson they read or listen to. Many linguists agree that students with broad vocabulary knowledge tend to have better academic results. It also helps the students to engage in proper and effective communication. Hence, parents and teachers need to help their children and students in mastering vocabulary since they are young.

How to Help Students Improve Their Vocabulary Skills?

As we understand that vocabularies are an essential element in language, we should help our students and children strengthen them. Below are some tips and strategies to support students in improving their vocab knowledge:

  • Read various kinds of books or other types of reads.
  • Write down unknown words and look them up in the dictionary.
  • Download a digital dictionary on the phone.
  • Varies your words when writing or talking.
  • Make target goals for the learning.
  • Put your focus more on the sentence, not on the definitions.
  • Practice writing (diary, poem, short story, or other).
  • Learn more about synonyms words by using the Thesaurus dictionary.
  • Be confident and speak out the words.

What is the Suitable Class Activity for Teaching Vocabulary?

Teaching vocabulary to students might not be the toughest thing, but it is still challenging. Sometimes the students would get bored while learning, so the teacher should level up their teaching strategy to help the students. Below are some examples of class activities for vocabulary learning.

  • Give the students some keywords and ask them to form a short text out of them.
  • Make a match-up game of words and its definition.
  • Ask the students to make word maps in groups.
  • Give the students a cross-word puzzle to solve.
  • Watch a movie or video and ask the students to write the particular vocabulary, for example, ask them to list every animal-related word or to write every color word they hear.
