What are Sequencing Skills?

When we make a speech or tell a story to others, we should make it correctly sequenced. A talk or text with the correct sequence will help the speaker or author deliver the message clearly and help the audience or readers grasp the meaning.

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, sequencing is mixing various things in a particular order. In language learning, sequencing skill is an essential ability. It is the ability to decode the elements of a text (beginning, middle, and last). Sequencing skills help students to write text in the correct order and aid students to re-tell text they just read or speech they just heard.

The teacher usually teaches this skill while the students learn about a narrative text. Applying sequence order in the narrative text will make it more logical and make sense. It also helps the reader determine the cause-and-effect moments, which develop focus span and critical thinking.

How to Apply Sequence Skills to Narrative Text?

In narrative text, the plot has three main sequence orders (beginning, middle, and ending). The order of the narrative text is exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. Exposition and rising action are part of the beginning sequence.

The climax is in the middle, and the falling action and resolution are the ending part. In addressing the beginning part of the narrative text, we can use "First". Use this word at the beginning of the first paragraph or sentence. To address the middle part, use the "Next", and to conclude, use the "Last" term.

The teacher should guide the students to use the first, next, then, after, and last to help students understand the sense of time in reading and writing. Sequencing in the narrative text is an essential element and is a comprehension strategy for understanding the message. It connects one sentence to another and one paragraph to another.

Why Should Students Learn Sequence Skills?

As one of the essential knowledge for human life, sequencing skill naturally comes when children are still at an early age. Young kids develop this ability when they become aware of their daily activities, such as time to wake up, eat breakfast, go to school, playtime, and dinner.

The student will understand the necessity of completing the task in order. However, even though the students understand the context of sequence time, teachers and parents should teach them how to incorporate that knowledge to create works (speech or text). Below are some benefits of learning sequencing skills:

  • Mastering sequence skills helps students to write and understand a narrative text.
  • It supports students in re-telling the speech or story they just consumed.
  • This skill develops self-monitoring awareness in the students.
  • Sequence skills help the students enhance their logical-thinking sense, which they will use in many lessons, such as mathematics.
  • It improves the focus span and attention to detail skills.
  • Understanding sequence skills will deepen the comprehension of literature learning.
  • It enhances the writing ability of the students.
  • Learning sequence skills will improve the student's understanding of the structure of text and speech and how they link to each other.

How to Identify Sequence Order in Text?

Every text should have a sequenced order to help the readers attain information more easily. The teacher and parents should guide the students to engage in a critical reading session and ensure the students can point out the sequence of orders in the text.

It assists them in building a united logic in their writing. Hence, recognizing sequence time in a text is essential. To identify these elements, you could look at the text and try to find the beginning, middle, and end.

Pay attention to words such as first, next, after that, then, finally, and lastly. These words are known as sequencing words or transitions. They connect each part or element in the text.

Sequencing words also precede the reader or audience of the event's existence. The teacher can give the students a list or table of sequencing transition vocabularies (First of all, in the beginning, meanwhile, suddenly, in the end, or after all).

What Activities to Improve Sequence Skills in Students?

Sequence skill is essential not only to help students understand the narrative text. It is beneficial for them in doing daily life activities. As written above, the foundation of sequencing skills comes naturally to children.

However, parents and teachers should guide the children to develop the skill. Below are some activities that could help students to enhance their sequence skills:

  • Give the students two pictures of the same activities, and ask them to identify the first and last steps.
  • These second activities are a step up from the first. Give the students three activities instead of two and ask them to arrange them in order.
  • Tell the students a story or let them read a text and ask them to retell the story.

Sequence skills help the students enhance their logical-thinking sense, which they will use in many lessons, such as mathematics. It helps students to write text in the correct order and aids students in retelling text they just read or speech they just heard.

Through the Worksheets First, Next, and Last Sequencing, the students can develop their sequencing skills through various engaging and exciting learning activities. Mastering sequence skills helps students to write and understand a narrative text.
