What Does it Mean by Self-Esteem?

Have you ever been in a situation where you feel so small among others and do not dare to bring up yourself? Or maybe, on the other chance, you feel confident about being the center of attention from people around you? It might be a broad definition. However, those feeling is something that many call self-esteem. Are you familiar with this term?

There are various definitions and explanations of self-esteem from many experts out there. Here is the broad description from the Cambridge Dictionary: it is a belief or confidence people have in their capability and value. According to the Department of Sociology at the University of Maryland, self-esteem means the positive or negative takes towards oneself. It refers to how someone sees themselves and everything within (capability, knowledge, skill, and appearance). Self-esteem can affect how people put their place in the society. People with high self-esteem will have a tall confidence, which makes them believe in their skills and capabilities. They will think of themselves as the best person in their fields. Meanwhile, people with low self-esteem usually pull themselves from others because they are not confident with what they have. Managing self-esteem is challenging, but we all should strive to take care of it. 

What are the Signs of Healthy Self-Esteem?

As we learn from the previous part, self-esteem is the opinion of someone towards their self. It is essential as it will affect how a person behaves and control their manner. Self-esteem could influence the dynamic of someone's personal or social relationships. Hence, we should manage and take care of our self-esteem so it does not disturb or harm ourselves and others.

It is also crucial for parents and teachers to help their children and students to have healthy self-esteem from a young because it will affect how they take various learning and life experiments through their growing era. Students or youngsters with healthy self-esteem will have a better take on what they encounter, and it will affect their behavior and manner. It also will give them a feeling of self-worth and security of what they own. Below are some traits or signs of healthy self-esteem according to the Counselling and Psychology Services Center of Weber State University:

  • Decisive in communicating needs and opinions.
  • Confident while making decisions.
  • Capable of building a healthy and honest relationship with others and cutting off from a toxic and unhealthy one.
  • Have reasonable expectations for others and themselves.
  • Able to control their stress healthily.

How to Identify if Someone Has Low Self-Esteem?

As we learn about healthy self-esteem, we also should be aware if our students or children are struggling with low self-esteem. Some people might overlook this condition and consider it as something unnecessary. Few people even label these circumstances as laziness, unreliable, reckless, and other negative labels. As adults, we should be careful with our remarks because our words can affect the children's and students' behavior. In many cases, someone's reason for their low self-esteem is the adults around them. Someone who grows up with negative and spiteful remarks from people near them will see themselves in the same light. They view themselves as worthless people who cannot do anything correctly and always make mistakes. In the long run, the kids will grow to be the person who blames themselves for every misfortune they encounter. Before it is too late, below are some signs of someone with low self-esteem:

  • They think that things are all-black or all-white.
  • People with low self-esteem will assume that one mistake will ruin their life.
  • They focus on the negative things only.
  • They tend to be pessimistic even for positive things.
  • Overthink and jump into the worst scenario.
  • They think that what they feel is the fact of themselves.
  • Take every matter personally.

How to Help Students Develop Their Self-Esteem?

As we learn how critical self-esteem is for young people, as adults, we should take a step to help them build healthy self-esteem. Below are some strategies and tips for developing self-esteem:

  • Do not compare them to another person. Remember that everyone has their talents and abilities.
  • Do not belittle and encourage them when they want to do something.
  • Tell them encouragement with positive and affirmation words.
  • Be their positive and supportive people.
  • Remind them of their positive traits and talents.

Why is Self-Esteem Important for Students?

Self-esteem is crucial for students because it helps them build confidence, security, and motivation. Students with healthy self-esteem tend to do well in their school's performance. They will have a motivation to study because they believe in their ability. Students with healthy self-esteem will realize what is their strength and their talents. Hence, they can choose the proper additional school activities to help them develop those skills. Healthy self-esteem also helps students improve their social skills and enables them to express and communicate their ideas and opinions.
