Learn how heat and light energy are connected with these Light and heat Energy Worksheets!

Summary: Light is a type of radiation which move in electromagnetic waves and has kinetic energy that makes it visible to human eyes. Meanwhile, heat is energy flow from a warm to a chilled object. We can transform light into heat energy and vice versa. Learning about light and heat energy can help students to understand the phenomenon around them. It helps them about how nature works and gives them a solid foundation for their future studies.

What is Light Energy?

Light is an element that helps humans on many occasions, especially helping us in seeing objects. It is essential because even though we have healthy eyes if there is no light, we cannot see a thing. Light is a type of radiation which move in electromagnetic waves and has kinetic energy that makes it visible to human eyes. According to Dr Christopher S. Baird from West Texas A&M University, lights contain quantum objects known as photons. One photon has various properties, such as wavelength, frequency, wavevector, period, speed, position, wave phase, momentum, spin, electromagnetic field, and kinetic energy.

Human has depended on light energy since a long time ago. Besides helping humans to see, lights also have various functions. Natural light energy influences many elements on Earth, such as the water temperature, biological process, plant photosynthesis, providing vitamin D, helping the human body to work correctly, preventing mould, and more. Some examples of natural light sources are the sun, stars, moonlight, lightning, natural fires and bioluminescent creatures. Meanwhile, the artificial sources are fire, light bulbs, torches, LEDs and more.

What is the Definition of Heat Energy?

Based on the Science Learning Hub PokapÅ« Akoranga PÅ«taiao, heat is energy flow from a warm to a chilled object. This energy is everywhere, even inside our bodies. The motion of atoms, molecules or ions in solids, liquids, or gases objects is the cause of heat energy. It has a particular characteristic, which is transferable. Many experts stated that heat is a thermal energy transfer because of the contrast temperature. From the law of thermodynamics, we know that heat moves from an object with a higher to a lower temperature. Heat has many benefits for humans, such as cooking, warming the body, drying, ironing clothes, providing power and more. There are three types of heat energy transfer, conduction, convection and radiation. Conduction is the energy transfer between two touching objects. Convection is heat delivery because of the fluids' motion. Lastly, radiation is the energy transfer without any movement of matter.

How are Light and Heat Energy Relate to Each Other?

We cannot separate light and heat energy as they are related. We can transform light into heat energy and vice versa. One of the most familiar examples of this energy shift is when the light from the sun hits our skin, and we can feel the warmth. Another case is when we touch the surface of an outdoor wall on a bright day, and we can feel its heat. It can happen because the long wavelength or infrared of the sun oscillates with the material of the wall and cause a motion. This phenomenon proves that energy transfer occurs at the molecular rather than electronic level. It is also one of the characteristics of heat to be an invisible light for human eyes, but we can feel it through our skin. We can also say that some light energy sources also produce heat.

How to Differentiate between Light and Heat Energy?

Light and heat energy are two kinds that usually go in tandem but have some differences. They are alike, and it causes some confusion for some people. Both are energies that affect daily human life. Below is the table of their differences:

Heat Energy

Light Energy

Heat is a kinetic energy that human cannot see with bare eyes, but they can feel it through the skin.

Light is an electromagnetic energy that humans can see.

Heat has a slow speed when it travels.

Light can move at a high speed.

Heat can provide the sensation of warmth that can be used for daily human activities.

Light helps humans to see their surroundings.

Heat flows from objects with high to low temperature.

Light can spread in any direction.

Why Should Students Learn about Light and Heat Energy?

Studying heat, light, and other types of energy is in the curriculum for every school. The students usually learn about this topic in the physics classroom. Energy is the solid foundation of all activities and works. It enables things to happen and changes which will keep the world moving. There are many types of energy (light, heat, mechanical, gravitational, electrical, sound, chemical and atom or atomic). We cannot make or destroy energy. However, they are transferable. As we learn in the previous paragraph, light and heat energy have a tight relationship as they affect each other.

Learning about light and heat energy can help students to understand the phenomenon around them. It helps them about how nature works and gives them a solid foundation for their future studies. Studying energy in school can trigger their curiosity and enable them to dream and plan for a better future world.
