If September 17 falls on the weekend, schools and offices will celebrate Constitution Day the following weekdays. The Education Department of the United States of America asks the school to teach the students about Constitution Day. It will teach the students to respect their history and develop nationalism and love for their country.

What is the History behind the Constitution Day of the United States of America?

The U.S. Constitution was signed on September 17, 1787, by the delegates to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This historic record established the foundation of the federal government and outlined the rights and freedoms of American citizens. The Constitution substituted the Articles of Confederation, which had served as the governing elemental manuscript of the United States since the country's independence from Great Britain.

Constitution Day itself, however, did not become an official celebration until much later. In 1940, Congress passed a joint resolution establishing the third Sunday in May as "I Am an American Day," a day to celebrate and reaffirm loyalty to the United States and its principles of freedom and democracy. In 1952, the holiday was renamed "Citizenship Day" and shifted to September 17 to honor the signing of the Constitution. Finally, in 2004, Senator Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia proposed a statement to redesignate "Citizenship Day" as "Constitution Day and Citizenship Day" and to make it a federal holiday. It was signed by President George Bush on December 8, 2004, and became the national holiday we celebrate nowadays.
