What is Hebrew?

Hebrew is a Semitic language from the land of Canaan (West of the Jordan River in Palestine). This language was taken by the Ibhri or the Israelites when they took over the possession of Canaan. The Hebrew language is also known as the speech of Canaan and Judean (after the Judah Kingdom).

According to the Library of Yale University, the ancient Hebrew language was perfected from Mishnaic Hebrew before it became the language of the Bible in the 3rd century BC (Before Century). Around the 20th Century, Modern Hebrew was born from the ancient language based on the native tongue.

Hebrew is part of the Afroasiatic language family and almost disappeared in the 19th Century. This moment brought Hebrew as the successful model of linguistic revival. Nowadays, the Jews and Samaritans still use this language regularly.

What is the Hebrew Alphabet?

The Hebrews use a different alphabet system than English, called Alef-Bet. The name of the alphabet is derived from the first two letters in the line, Alef and Bet.

The Hebrew language is unique; they write text from right to left instead of left to right. Another unique thing about written Hebrew, some letters have two shape versions.

The Kaf, Mem, Nun, Peh, and Tzadeh have different forms when they come up in the middle of a word. However, they have the same shape at the beginning or end of a term.

The original Hebrew alphabet does not have vowels, like most of the writing system of the Semitic language. The natives do not need vowels to read the language. However, when people started to forget Hebrew, the academists developed a vowel system that consisted of dots and dashes, known as nikkudim (points).

People put these nikkudim on the top or below the Alef-bet to make people who have not mastered Hebrew read them with ease. The Hebrew text with these dots and dashes is called pointed text. There are various Hebrew writing styles, and block print or Assyrian text is the most common.
