What are Australian Animals?

Everyone might know that kangaroos and koalas are famous animals from Australia. However, they have more than those two cuties. Biologists found that there are 389 species of Australian native mammals. It is tiny compared to the overall vertebrate animals (animals with backbones); there are more than seven thousand species. With those numbers, there are still many unidentified species the researchers. In the wild nature of Australia, there are almost half of the country's birds, 87% of the mammals and 93% of reptiles and amphibians. Some examples of unique animals from Australia are kangaroo, koala, wallaby, dingo, wombat, platypus and echidna. There are some unfamiliar animals, Fitzroy River Turtle, Australian Southern Cassowary, Saltwater Crocodile, Mistletoebird, Tasmanian Devil, Short-Beaked Echidna, Laughing Kookaburra, Numbat, Pellucid Hawk Moth and Thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger). 

What is the History of Endemic Animals in Australia?

According to the National Park Service of Nevada, an endemic animal is an animal that can only be found in only one locationThe uniqueness of the animals in Australia started with a million years old history. Around 100 million years ago, there was a division in Gondwana Continent into two parts, Antarctica and Australia. After thirty million years, there was a drastic change in the land (geologic) and climate formation. This change leads Australia to have rich and various flora and fauna. It can happen because some originated animals from Gondwana survive the shift and undergo an evolution. This evolution resulted in the uniqueness of the species. As the continent move and with the natural boundaries around it, it creates a distinct zoological distribution.     

What are the Classifications of Australian Animals?

There are various types or classifications of Australian animals. We will talk about some of the most popular ones.

  • Mammals: Mammals are vertebrates in the animal class Mammalia, with the uniqueness of the ability to produce milk. The milk is to help the young mammal fill up their nutrients.
  • Marsupials: Marsupials are in the Marsupialia class and are also mammals. The unique characteristic of this type of animal is that the adults have a pouch on their abdomen to bring their babies.
  • Reptiles: According to National Geographic, reptiles are vertebrate animals with skin from scales. This type of animal is cold-blooded and air-breathing to survive life.
  • Monotreme: Monotreme are unique mammals since they lay an egg instead of giving birth. This type of mammal is also known as oviparous.
  • Macropods: Macropods are in the same animal family as marsupials, with their back legs larger than their front ones. This animal also has strong tails to balance their body. You can find them in Australia and Papua New Guinea.
  • Koala: Koalas might be the most famous animals because of their cute appearance. Their characteristics are the short and chunky physical form with a large head.
  • Dingo: Many people dingo as Australia's wild dog because of its physical form. It has a medium-sized body that possesses speed, stamina and agility.

Why Should Children Learn About Animals?

We can say that animals are characters that young children are most familiar with. Their colouring books, worksheets, cartoon, toys, and various things around them are filled with animal prints. Introducing animals to young children is essential as it has many benefits for their growth. One of the aims is for the students to understand and know their surroundings. They will grasp that humans are not the only creatures on this Earth. It also gives them a solid background knowledge for biology lessons when they enter formal school later. Parents and teachers can teach the students through various educational mediums, such as magazines, books, songs, videos and more. Getting to know about fauna also helps the kids develop empathy for others. Some education experts also stated that we could recognize our humanity through animals.
