Learn how to be Sherlock's apprentice with these Fingerprint Detective Worksheets!

Summary: Fingerprints are an unerring verification of someone's identity. It is because the patterns of each fingerprint of every human are different. Fingerprints have a critical role in defining identity, especially in criminal investigations. There are three types of fingerprints (latent, patent, and plastic). The patterns of fingerprints are arch, whorl, and loop. Fingerprints are the most cost-efficient, simple, and secure tool for identification.

What is Fingerprint?

While watching movies, especially if the genre is about crime or detectives, we often find the scene where the detective or cops look for fingerprints. What are fingerprints? Based on Rutgers University, fingerprints are skin patterns on the fingertips. The papillary outline in the cap of the fingers is the cause of the marks left by the fingers. Fingerprints are an unerring verification of someone's identity. It is because the patterns of each fingerprint of every human are different. Another reason is the fingerprint does not change even though someone is growing up. Each wrinkle on the external skin (epidermis) has some sweat pores along the fingers and is established in the internal skin (dermis). Wounds such as burns, scratches, or cuts would not damage the wrinkle. Besides the hand fingers, cops can use the foot for identification. However, they chose the hand fingers most time because it took little time and effort to process them.

What are the Use of Fingerprint?

Fingerprints have a critical role in defining identity, especially in criminal investigations. Fingerprints are part of biometric science, which specializes in learning and understanding body measurements and calculations to help determine human characteristics. Fingerprints are a one-of-a-kind identifier because no one has the same marks on the tip of their fingers. Hence, it is crucial proof for police when they investigate something. When they capture the fingerprints, they will match them with their database to find the culprit.

The INTERPOL has an international fingerprint database known as AFIS (Automatic Fingerprint Identification System). The country members of INTERPOL can access this database to check the fingerprints of a crime that indicates an international crime. Besides identifying perpetrators, police also use fingerprints to determine victims from a case or accident.

Fingerprints also have many purposes for our daily life. The ridges patterns on our fingers help us to grab and hold something. These patterns also support the fine motoric skills of our hands. Fingerprints also act as the sensor patch for temperature or texture.

How Many Types of Fingerprints?

We know how essential the role of fingerprints on police investigations. It helps the investigators to determine the suspects, victims, and witnesses. In the investigation situations, there are three types of fingerprints, latent, patent and plastic. The sweat and oil of the skin form latent fingerprints. The human's bare eyes cannot see these fingerprints, and it needs some process such as using powder or chemicals. Patent fingerprints can be formed by a material such as dirt, ink, blood, and more. We do not need any complicated process to recognize these since they are apparent to human eyes. Lastly, plastic fingerprints are a 3D mark of the fingers on the paint, wax, soap, and more. Like the patent fingerprints, the plastic is visible to human eyes.

What are the Three Patterns of Fingerprint?

Fingerprint identification is one of the primary breakthroughs of biometric science. It allows the police to identify people related to a criminal faster. Besides law enforcement, many fields utilize fingerprint systems, such as hospitals, schools, offices, and banks. Biometric science divided the pattern of fingerprints into three types arch, whorl, and loop. The main characteristics of arch fingerprints are it has fewer cores and lines or deltas. Arch fingerprints have two kinds (plain and tented) and are the rarest type, with only 5% of people owning them. The whorl fingerprints have one core and two deltas in the pattern. There are two types of whorl fingerprints (plain and central pocket). The most popular motif of fingerprints is the loop. Around 60% to 70% of people own this type. The loop pattern partially has one core and a delta. The loop fingerprint has three kinds (ulnar, radial, and central pocket).

Besides those three types of fingerprint patterns, there are two supplementary patterns. The double loop whorl is a pattern of two enveloped different loops from opposite directions. Lastly, any unidentified fingerprint pattern is known as an accidental fingerprint. These patterns consist of each bit from the arch, loop and whorl patterns.

Why Fingerprint is Important?

In criminal investigations by police, fingerprints have two essential roles, to authenticate and identify. There are several biometrics features that cops can use, such as face recognition, eye scanning, or DNA identification. However, fingerprints are the most cost-efficient, simple, and secure tool for identification. There are some points of the fingerprints' importance:

  • Fingerprints are irreplaceable and cannot lose.
  • It is complicated and arduous to fake fingerprints.
  • No one can figure out or imagine the pattern of fingerprints.
  • Fingerprints are beneficial to set high security for integrity verification.
  • The progress of checking fingerprints is easy and does not need much time.
  •  Fingerprints provide liability.
