The new year festival starts with the second new moon appearing after the winter peak. In Gregorian Calendar, the calendar we usually use, the celebration happens on any date between 21 January to 20 February. Some countries also call this festival the Spring Festival because it celebrates the coming of the vernal season to symbolize luck and prosperity for the year ahead. People decorate their houses with red ornaments to lure fortune into their homes, and the adults will give money pockets to the children in red envelopes.

In Vietnam, they called this festival Tết Nguyên Đán or Tết means Festival of the First Morning of The First Day. The Vietnamese clean their residences and adorn them with pretty and crisp flowers. Peach blossoms to symbolize energy and kumquat to symbolize prosperity are two common flowers used in Vietnam celebrations. In South and North Korea, the new year festival known as Seollal occurs for three days. On this occasion, the Koreans do a Charye ritual to serve meals for their ancestors to gain happiness for the year ahead. The Tsagaan Sar, or The White Moon Festival, is the new year celebration in Mongolia. The Mongolians send their prayer through ovoo (a shrine from heaps of rock). In New York, United States of America, the Chinese New Year festival started with the explosion of around 600.000 firecrackers in Sara D Roosevelt Park. A long and massive parade with lion dances also joined to merry the festive in Chinatown's streets.

At those times, people prepared and served a set of various melas to honour the gods and ancestors at the end or the start of the new year. There is also a legend about the origin of the Lunar New Year. One of the most popular myths is about the mythic monster, Nian (Year). Based on the myth, Nian attacked and devoured the village's stock at the beginning of the new year. The villagers found out that the monster is afraid of loud noises, blazing lights, and red colour. Later, they used this stuff to get rid of the beast. The villagers then celebrate this achievement by practising the Lunar New Year tradition each year.
