What is the Meaning of CBT?

For the last few years, people have been giving particular attention to the importance of mental health issues. Many realized that a healthy mind would affect a healthy body. A human with stable physical and mental abilities can function better in work, school, society, and other aspects of life.

However, it is not easy to maintain a balanced mind and mental health. Every person must have been through a break-point when everything feels too much and suffocating. The level of the frustrating feeling might vary depending on various aspects.

It is normal and very humane to get stressed over what life serves. Sometimes, we can get over it through some relaxing or fun times, such as watching movies, eating a delicious meal, shopping, spending time with friends or family, and more. However, some events might wear you off, and you feel like you are in endless darkness. At times like this, you might want professional help from a therapist or psychologist.

Many experts usually recommend you try Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). According to the American Psychologist Association (APA), the definition of CBT is a psychological treatment for various mental health issues including depression, anxiety disorders, substance abuse, eating disorders, and more. Many kinds of research stated that this therapy is the most effective out of other forms of psychological medication.

Why Should People Undergo CBT?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps people to manage and improve their mental health through a talking treatment with a therapist. It assists people who struggle with depression and anxiety in general. However, this therapy also has many advantages to help many people. Below are some benefits of CBT treatment:

  • Maintain the symptoms of mental health issues.
  • Stop the relapse of mental health signs.
  • Heal mental health problems as an alternative to medication.
  • Give the patient a healthier choice of coping mechanism.
  • Analyze the proper method to manage emotion and stress.
  • Work out the problems in a relationship or marriage by learning to communicate in a better way.
  • Assist someone who is struggling to handle grief or loss.
  • Fight the trauma from past events.
  • Learn how to grapple with the condition of medical illness.
  • Help people to overcome their substance addiction.

How Does CBT Work?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one psychology therapy in the form of talking therapy that can help someone control and change their perspective on their problems. This medication aims to adjust how someone thinks and behaves to fight depression or anxiety.

Based on the statement by the National Health Service of the United Kingdom, the principal concept of CBT is that human feelings, thoughts, physical sensations, and actions are interlinked. Thus, if there is an abnormality in one of those senses, it will affect the others and cause an imbalance. We can refer to this disproportion as a mental health issue.

CBT treatment helps struggling people avoid the unending negative cycles that could trap them and make them do something unwanted. The therapist will help break down the problems into small pieces and solve them individually. Hence the patient needs to open themselves and trust the therapist.

What are the Procedural Steps of CBT?

Prochaska and DiClemente found The Transtheoretical Model (TTM) to the stages of people when they change their perspectives or behaviors. This model was found in the late 1970s. It explains how someone works on themselves to break their bad or negative thoughts and learn to be better. The concept of TTM is that people undergo six stages of change.

  • Precontemplation - People have not yet realized the effect of their bad habits or minds. They will keep doing what they thought was correct and do not have the intention to change.
  • Contemplation - People start to feel the consequences of their habits and consider changing them. The trigger of this stage can come from within themselves or because of people who are affected by their actions.
  • Preparation - People start to prepare themselves to change and take small steps by acknowledging their wrongdoing and determine to change.
  • Action - People begin to change their behavior and their way of thinking.
  • Maintenance - People have continued to live in new habits while working on not going back to their past behaviors.
  • Termination - People already feel content with their advanced habits and have no intention of returning to their old behaviors.

When is the Appropriate Time to Do CBT?

Even though we all know that stress is part of life, it does not mean we could just let it be. A slight inconvenience might be solved with a little fun and enjoyment. However, some stress can lead a person to have depression. On this occasion, the person should arrange a meeting with the mental health experts.

Another case is when you overthink everything too much to the point your head feels packed, and you lose your sleep and appetite; please call your nearest medical experts. Remember that it is okay to feel not okay, so seeking help from professional experts will help you and others around you.
