Stoewen from the National Center for Biotechnology Information, Wellness is the combination of physical, mental, and spiritual elements, which helps the body, engages the mind, and stimulates the spirit. Eight dimensions of wellness complement each other: physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, vocational, financial, and environmental.

What is the Explanation of the 8 Dimensions of Wellness?

Nurturing wellness is a responsibility for everyone because it will help people be more productive and have a stable and balanced life. We should take care of the wellness of ourselves and the people we love. As we learned before, there are eight dimensions of wellness that we should nurture. Below are detailed explanations of each of them:

  • Emotional: Emotional wellness refers to the ability of someone to understand and identify their personal feeling and know how to manage them.

  • Physical: Physical wellness relates to the capacity and knowledge of how someone manages their body health. It means they are aware of what they use, consume, and do and its effects on their bodies.

  • Vocational or Occupational: Occupational wellness encloses all elements of well-being that relate to personal satisfaction in someone's job or career.

  • Social: Social wellness confines various related areas about social connections, relationships, and individual expressions.

  • Spiritual: Spiritual wellness relates to the diverse aspects of someone finding a purpose in life. It usually relates to the belief in a higher power.

  • Intellectual: Intellectual wellness encloses the many elements to manage the health of the brain and mind.

  • Environmental: This dimension contains all scopes of health that correlate to the environment around humans and how the environment can influence human health.

  • Financial: Financial wellness encloses all elements of well-being about finances, including understanding and skills in financial planning and managing costs.     

Who Identified the 8 Dimensions of Wellness?

Many people are amazed and helped by the eight dimensions of wellness. It guides and supports many people to pursue a happy and balanced life. The eight dimensions of wellness make people realize that a healthy life does not only come from the prime physic, but it is the combination of many elements. 

The genius behind the concept is Dr. Peggy Swarbick. She found this idea in the early nineties based on the Wellness and Occupational Therapy by Dr. Jerry Johnson. It is a study that explains the gap between people who suffer from mental or substance use disorders.

Dr. Swarbick stated that the eight dimensions of the wellness model have evolved for many years based on people's experiences with traumatic accidents. In the beginning, there are only five dimensions. Over time, they turn into eight, following the needs and issues of the current world.

Why Should We Apply the 8 Dimensions of Wellness?

Having a stable and healthy life is everyone's dream. Living with prime physic, a calm mental mind, a proper job, enough money in the pocket, and being surrounded by loved ones are everyone's wishes. To achieve balance and soundness in our lives, we could follow the eight dimensions of wellness.

Each element will contribute to our understanding of wellness or quality of life, and each simulates and coincides with the others. Sometimes some elements may be more apparent than others, but neglect of any one element for a long time can affect overall health.

How to Manage a Healthy Life?

  • Find an active activity that will increase your productivity.
  • Find a spark of joy to escalate your day, such as eating a delicious breakfast or starting the day with small talk with your friends or coworkers.
  • Sleep in adequate time (eight hours a day).
